Leadership Tasks/Notes

Den Stuff

Attendance (New 9/15)

Please remember to track the attendance for each of your events and email them to Arba Smith (Pack Secretary) on a periodic basis.  There are certain awards that your Den and the Pack can win where attendance plays a part.  If you decide to use the Cub Trax Software (see below), you can just email the whole spread sheet.

Parent Survey/Talent Forms (New 9/15)

http://pack137abq.com/documents/Parent%20&%20Family%20Talent%20Survey%20Sheet.pdf
I would like to collect the Parent Talent Survey forms at the Pack Meeting on 9/25.  These are important, because they help illuminate any skills/talents of the parents that the pack might be able to tap into.  For example, in January, the pack theme is "Cub Scout Car Show" - having some in the Pack who knows something about NASCAR and can share it with the pack is very beneficial.

Den Tracking Software (New 9/15)

Some software that I used to track den activities is:
http://trax.boy-scouts.net/cubtrax.htm
This software is free to use and is in a spreadsheet format.  I used it last year for tracking the Tigers data and found it useful.

Popcorn Sales (New 9/15)

We desperately need to raise some cash through Popcorn sales this year - especially since the Pack has grown so much.  We need to look at purchasing additional Raingutter Regatta gutters, and a new Pinewood Derby Track (or 2).  Don't assume that your boys are out there selling - please be proactive and check.

Registration Fees/Applications (New 9/15)

Please have the remainder of your Den's registration fees/applications turned in by the Den Meeting on 9/18 - that's for Boys and Adults.  The adult's registration fees for the background checks are being covered by the Pack.

Events Coming Up That May Have Slipped Under the Radar (New 9/15)

New Scout Adventure Day (Saturday 9/22) - Here is the link for the flyerHere are what awards they will be working on.
"All new Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, Webelos, and their families are invited to attend this special eventjust for our new members who have signed up during the Fall Roundup in August and September. Boys may attend individually or as part of their new den.
There is NO CHARGE to participate!"

Scout-O-Rama (Saturday 10/20) Here is the link for the flyer.
From the information on the flyer, this looks like recruiting event where we let the public get a peek at our big pack events (Raingutter Reagatta, Pine Wood Derby, etc).

Cub Scout Leader Pow Wow (Saturday 11/3)Here is the link for the flyer.
I've never been to one of these, but this a leadership training event that is supposed to be pretty good.

Pinewood Derby Distribution Day and Training (Saturday 11/10)
This event is our own creation.  Chuck Smith, our illustrious coordinator, is going to teach the Boys and Parents how to build a Pinewood Derby car from the ground up.  The will be particularly helpful for the families that have never built a car before.  We are planning on distributing the cars on that day.  More agenda details are to follow.

National Den Award (New 9/18)

Do we have any Dens that qualify for the National Den Award?

l Den Award for 2006-07?  I was looking at the requirements and they are really not that tough, but they take a little bit of planning - especially during the summer months.  The central focus of the award is attendance to events - hence, the need for tracking attendance.

The National Den Award recognizes dens that conduct a quality, year-round program. Service projects, Cub Scout Academics and Sports, field trips, character development, and Cub Scout camping are areas that are emphasized. Dens earn the award as a team, not as individual den members. The recognition is a ribbon for the den flag or den doodle.

To earn the National Den Award, a Cub Scout den must

  • Have at least 50 percent of the den's Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, or Webelos Scouts attend two den meetings and one pack meeting or activity each month of the year.
  • Complete six of the following during the year:
    1. Use the denner system within the den.
    2. In a Tiger Cub den, use shared leadership and rotate the boy/adult host team.
    3. Have 50 percent of the den go on three field trips per year. A field trip may be used in place of a den meeting.
    4. As a den, attend a Cub Scout day camp, Cub Scout or Webelos Scout resident camp, or a council family camping event with at least 50 percent of the den membership.
    5. Conduct three den projects or activities leading to a Character Connections discussion.
    6. As a den, participate in at least one of the Cub Scout Sports programs.
    7. As a den, participate in at least one of the Cub Scout Academics programs.
    8. Have 50 percent of the den participate in a den conservation/resource project.
    9. Have 50 percent of the den participate in at least one den service project.

Once the requirements are completed as stated, the signed National Den Award application is sent to the local council service center where the ribbon can be obtained.

Pack Stuff

Pack Website (New 9/15)

http://Pack137ABQ.com (obviously or you wouldn't be reading this now)
The Pack website is a work in progress, but is functional.  Please advertise this to your Dens in the Den Meetings - every Den Meeting.  This will go a long way in simplifying your communication with your Parents.

Please send me anything you would like displayed on your Den Pages.  Things like:

  • Den Highlights
  • Den Calendar Items
  • Achievement Plans
  • Achievements Earned by the Boys
  • Shared Leadership Plan (Tigers)

and anything else that is appropriate.

I'm still working on the Leadership Page http://pack137abq.com/pack_leadership.php.  If you would like some resource posted, please let me know.

Pack Meeting Recognition (New 9/15)

We want every Cub Scout to get recognized this September Pack Meeting, if at all possible.  The new Scouts will be receiving neckerchiefs and slides at the very least.  Tigers, any easy thing to accomplish between now and then is the "Tiger Cub Immediate Recognition Emblem" - all he has to do is learn the Cub Scout Promise, the Cub Scout Sign and the Cub Scout Salute.

The way that presentations will work at the Pack Meeting is the award will be presented to the Parent and the Parent will present it to his/her Scout.

Upcoming Training (New 9/15)

Leadership Training
Remember that for the leadership training on 9/22, you need to register by calling the council by COB 9/19 to get the $5.00 rate - otherwise the cost will be $10.  The pack will pick up the cost of that training.

BALOO Training
For the BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) training on 9/29, the registration fee is $10 and you must register by the 9/25.  You can register afterwards, but the registration fee goes (although, I don't have that amount).
