Saturday, 10/18/2008 Hike at Albuquerque Volcanoes

Who: Pack 137, Parents and Cub Scouts

When: 10/18/2008 from 9am to 3pm. 

Where: Petroglyph National Monument (Volcanoes) - "The Three Sisters"

Driving Directions:
From I-40 west of Albuquerque, take exit #149 and head north on Paseo Del Volcan for 4.8 miles to the unpaved Volcanoes Access Road. Turn right onto the access road and drive straight ahead for a few hundred yards to the trailhead.

The entrance is across the street from the Eclipse Aviation Building (sort of).

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate.  There is an elevation change of 165 feet

Distance Options:

  • 1.0 mile - Loop around "Black Volcano" and back
  • 2.0 mile - Loop around "Vulcan Volcano" and back
  • 6.3 miles - Loop around "Bond Volcano" and back

Exposure: Full Sun, however, there are shelters along the way

Trail Surface: Packed dirt, sand, loose rock

  • Small First Aid Kit
  • Each Scout is encouraged to wear his own backpack, to carry his own supplies.
  • GPS - Optional, but a nice to have
  • Rain Pancho (or trash bag), just in case...
